recalls to be aware of
« on: September 19, 2007, 05:31:12 PM »

Suzuki and Polaris all-terrain vehicles (ATVs)

Problem:
On Suzuki ATVs, the wrong-size mounting bolt under the fuel tank could allow gasoline to leak and cause a fire. On Polaris ATVs, the throttle cable could bind when the handlebars are turned full left or full right, causing the engine to unexpectedly speed up, causing unintended vehicle acceleration. The fuel line can also rub against the chassis, resulting in a fuel-line leak and, possibly, fire.

Models:
The following Suzuki ATVs are included in the recall: 27,000 '04-'05 Suzuki Eiger and Vinson ATVs sold from August 2, 2003 through August 26, 2004, by Suzuki motorcycle and ATV dealers: Eiger models LT-A400K4, LT-A400FK4, LT-F400K4, LT-F400FK4, LT-A500FK5, and LT-F500FK5; Vinson models KT-A500FK4 and LT-F500FK4. There have been no reports or incidents of injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The following Polaris ATVs are included in the recall: 12,170 '04 Polaris Sportsman 700 EFI ATVs sold from March 2003 through August 2004 by Polaris dealers nationwide for $7,900 to $8,900. Recall involves all '04 model year Sportsman 700 EFI ATVs with model numbers A04CH68CU, A04CH68AU, A04CH68AP, and A04CH68AQ. The model number appears on the rear upper frame tube located directly under the right side of the seat. Vehicles have a black seat with a gray, red, and black chassis. "700 Sportsman" is prominently displayed on the right and left sides of the chassis, body, and fuel tank; "EFI" appears on the instrument/headlight pod. There have been 19 incidents, with two resulting in minor injuries, that involved throttle-cable binding and vehicle acceleration. There have been 31 incidents, none with injuries, related to gasoline leaking from fuel line rubbing against the chassis.

What to do:
For Suzuki, have an authorized dealer replace the fuel-petcock mounting bolt and sealing washers; repairs will be made free of charge. For information, call 800-444-5077. For Polaris, call the dealer to arrange for inspection, rerouting, and, if necessary, replacement of the throttle cable and fuel line. Polaris is contacting owners directly. For information, call 800-765-2747.
