A friend of mine has lost his 2 mint conditioned white with the gray graphics YFZ 450's. They had less then a few rides on them and were stolen out of his garage. They were taken Aug. 2nd in the afternoon while he and his family were away. He has even heard that they were taken a ridden around DuneFest. The bikes are identical and in great shape. They both have Dr. D pipes, Pro Tapper Bars, ITP Wheels, K+N Airbox and the GYTR front bumper. He and his wife had only ridden the bikes once and had no insurance on them. Any info about the scumbags that took them would be greatly appreciated. Contact dunedude@apbb.netThis stuff makes me sick! And we need to catch these people and punish them to the full extent of the law...

This kind of thing has got to stop. Are they not able to use their homeowners insurance?
I'm not for registration - but we as a group are going to have to come up with something. I could be talking to the scum suckers and looking right at the quads and without some way to identify them I wouldn't even know it.

Sandflicker, why wouldn't you be for registration on an ATV ? A stolen quad cannot get a license unless a vin number can be seen. Without a registration card you cannot get license on a quad. Then if the thief parts out the stolen quad and rebuilds a new quad with the parts and uses a new frame, the state police still has to look at the engine to see it it is stolen as well before there can be a new vin number issued. It is still a long process but it is the only one we have that works.
On another note, just about everyone thinks that getting there quad stolen from them isn't going to happen. Well it does. Everytime that I leave my home for any length of time at all, I tripple lock my quads with huge chains and huge paddlocks. I also park my car, boat, or pickup in front of my shop to make sure that they don't get stolen. Why doesn't people get more serious about locking there bikes up ? It can happen to any of us.

I agree towman. It is so easy today once someone else has your bike for them to offload it somewhere else.
stolen bikes are very hot on the street, and there are so many bikes stolen every year. Luckily, Mark got his YFZ back. One of the few.
I am all for registration and lisencing if it is going to keep a tighter line on helping find stolen bikes.

The only problem I have with registration is more monies going to the State, after all we already purchase a permit. If it were possible to pay say 15 dollars for two years and have them registered at the same time, I'd be ok with it.
I'd also be ok with being able to have a street legal quad.

Well little Mark got his brand new 07 YFZ 450 stolen that had only been ridden 1 hour and the guy that stole it sold it back to him for $900.00. It was either that or never see it again and finish paying for it. The thief even told him to let it be if he didn't give him the $900.00 or his life wouldn't be worth 5 cents. Mark paid the $900.00 and didn't say a word.
I really think that paying $10.00 for 2 years isn't to bad for all the fun that I have on my bike. That is one fourth as much as I pay for my 15 foot aluminum boat and I have to title it, you don't have to title an ATV.

Hey there Double D,
Has your friend heard anything new, gotten their quads back? Posted on: August 26, 2007, 01:26:14 AM I have done some research on the registration issues. It seems in the states that require registration most stolen quad are not returned to the owners, or indeed ever found. I suppose if you have a stolen car which would be traveling on the roadway you have a better chance of getting it back, in some condition, than you are to have an off road machine found. You already have a VIN # on the quad and the motor to identify your vehicle, and therefore having a plate isn't going to make a lot of difference. The sad fact, it's being used in a place where no one checks ownership. So, by insuring your quad you have already established ownership. Therefore, we should all insure our quads.

Sandflicker.........I agree with you that we all should have insurance on our bikes.
Now, lets say your cruising across the dunes and are in an accident. Does your insurance cover you for libility? Medical for the other person? I know some people that have full coverage on their bikes, just like their automobiles It covers them just like if they were driving their car down the road. I also know some people that just have coverage to replace their bike.
I guess its all on personal preference. I know that if I were in a dune accident that was my fault, I do NOT want someone taking me to court and loosing my house, cars, hauler, and everything else I have worked for.

We have full coverage on ours. It's a great price and is worth the piece of mind. We seen Shannon Walker of State Farm in Medford. She is also a rider.

I must admit, I haven't purchased quad insurance yet. I am looking into it, and I agree it should cover the other guy too. Heaven forbid running into some one at the top of hill where neither could see. Whether my fault or not it wouldn't be good. Not long ago my nephew was hurt, and thank goodness he's doing ok now, from the ambulance and rescue worker and hospital charges it was a major bill. One I'm sure his family will be taking a long time to pay. Now I doubt quad insurance would have paid this - but if you caused a wreck it would pay it for the other guy. Anyway, insurance makes sense to me, it may cost a lot more than registration - but it will actually get my quads back.

Yes and no. They think they know who took the bikes but have not been able to locate them. Unfortunately, no one can put these people at the home they were stolen from. They pulled up to the garage during the day and loaded them into the back of a pickup truck. The folks that lost the bikes were in the process of moving and a neighbor saw a truck and thought it was them moving the bikes.
