Welcome to the forum Tippy,
I have never heard of any downshifting issues with the YFZ. I even check a YFZ website and could not find that problem listed. What type of terrain are you riding? Or does it do it all the time? Is your chain adjusted properly? Are you using the correct oil in the tranny?

Yea, take advice from a guy who rides an automatic ATV. You know I rode the KFX 700 for two months trying to get it to shift out of first gear. Yee! Haw!

I purchased one of the first YFZ 450's that came out. I had to wait 2 months to get it. I have noticed that downshifting sometimes doesn't go into gear. I also miss second gear when I am hillshooting to. I haven't done a thing to it other than adjust the shifter down one notch. It seemed to work a little better.
I would ride it if I were you. I think that someone might have just tightened it up a little bit to much. I would bet that the more you ride it the easier it will work.
Good luck.
