LADDER BARS
« on: February 22, 2007, 06:24:25 PM »

We are now in the process of building our own ladder bars for high output trucks that want to prevent any kind of axle wrap . Axle wrap can ruin your spring mounts on your axles . The ladder bars will prevent any kind of axle wrap , but , at the same time , you will not lose your stock ride . These ladder bars will sell hundreds of dollars less than other competitors . Hopefully , with the help of T.I. members , word can spread like mayonnaise on a spamich ! Grin Thanks guys .

6" lift, 37" tires, 4" SS exhaust, SCT XCAL2

If you are lifted and modded.....GET LADDER BARS!  Here is a copy of my post (story) from Ford Truck World of my experience from late August 06':

I have an 05 F350 King Ranch with 6" Fabtech Radius arm kit. I pull heavy trailers frequently (8-12K lb. range). I opted to NOT get the traction (ladder) bars when I had it lifted and put 37" tires, 4" turbo-back stainless Aero-Turbine exhaust and Edge Attitude w/ juice last March. (Amazing power by the way!) Anyway, I am writing this to STONGLY encourage anyone who is in similar situations as me to get traction bars installed. I had axle wrap occur and it was bad (but could have been a lot worse). What happened was I had a 4,500 lb trailer attached and had to nail the throttle to avoid an accident from a car hitting me (he was driving too fast around this blind-corner intersection) As I was crossing the intersection the turbo had not spooled up yet....and just when the power came on; was the same exact time the tounge of the trailer lifted most of the weight off of the rear tires due to the hump in the road that I was crossing over. I heard a loud BANG and then scraping sound (thought the trailer had come unhitched). Turns out the u-joint and yoke snapped @ the rear differential, the diff. was rotated up toward the bed approx. 30 degrees and both tires were up smashed against the front of the rear fenderwells! The u-bolts did not break, but the stacked blocks were blown out/towards the rear bumper. I immediately had Fabtech's ladder bars installed by Les Shwab in Gresham, OR and had to have the driveline repaired. I am going to have a custom block made that is 1 pc of either alum. or steel to replace the stacked block system that is standard with 6" systems. Just about everybody that I talked to and consulted with prior to my lifting the truck told me that ladder bars were not necessary with my conditions and "only" a 6" lift system.
Fabtech told me that stacking blocks is fine on their 6" systems (which involves their block stacked on top of the factory block). Their 6" kit for the 05 is replacement front (6" over) coil springs and a 3" block for the rear. I can't stand a level or less-than-level lifted truck; so I replaced the 3" block with a 4" block and that made the bed height just slightly higher than the front; just right in proportion for my tastes. Would the same incident have happened to me if the 3" Fabtech blocks were in place at the time? Yes I think so.
Does anyone know of a company that fabs 1 pc blocks? My only luck so far has been a custom machine shop.
Thanks!

Mayonnaise just takes away from the natural deliciousness of Spam.
I think I would rather have a bad case of axle wrap than a good case of Spam.

So are the new parts ready yet Shane?

I should have the first set on my truck on Tues. or wed. of this week . My buddy is making two prototype sets that are going to be severely abused on my truck along with another 600+ h.p. cummins that PDP has built in the last month . We are going to do what we can to try to break or bend them . I would imagine that we might be able to start selling them in the next few weeks . The price that we are shooting for is around 600 dollars . Most of the ladder bars that we have seen for sale normally run right around 1000 dollars . These ladder bars will have a shackle type system that will connect to your frame , so you will not lose your stock ride or flexability by having them connected directly to your frame , like most others do . We are doing what we can to make this a complete , bolt in system . Each one of these kits WILL BE custom made for your application . Certain kits WILL require some welding , but like I said we are working to make these kits a complete bolt in system . So , if you are wanting some of these bad boys , be sure you have the correct measurements for your application .

Do you need a Chevy to use as a  prototype?  I just might be able to make the trip to help you out Grin  If ya know what I mean.  Also what kind of finish will you be putting on them, powder coating, chrome, line-ex?

We were planning on just painting them black to help keep the cost down . We can finish them however you like, but, it will cost extra ( cost of mateials and labor ) . Cool

What about using the Lizard Skin coating?  Very durable and can be brushed on.

Shane,
Do you have anything I can put up  over at the Albany  Sand Drags? Season will be starting up and would help spread the word around. What else can they adapt to?
