NEW TOY HAULERS
« on: December 08, 2006, 05:18:49 PM »

Dear Santa,

What I want for Christmas.  By a very very good Dune Dude.
All I want for Christmas is a 40 ft. Fifth Wheel with triple slide outs, a 40" Plasma TV with Surround sound, ice maker, alarm system, central vac, enough beds to sleep 20, heated tanks, dual air conditioners, satellite dish, imported Italian Leather, diamond plate aplenty, and a thing that tells time.   Are you crazy DD, you'll screw your credit up!  The dreaded wife reality check, "you'll screw your credit up".

What's wrong with this picture?  Have you seen all the stuff that you can get in a Toy Hauler?  Do they need to be better than our homes?  Do we need to take on second jobs to buy the biggest and best rig available?  Will I avoid going to the dunes in a lesser RV?  Will I avoid shredding sand because my rig only has (Oh the horror) a 13" color TV?  Do I still need my sandwich cut in a diagonal to enjoy the meal?

What is happening to our beloved past time?  Are we getting too soft to enjoy the dunes?  Remember wearing your ATV riding gear in the truck to the dunes and not changing all weekend?  Eating hot dogs for lunch and dinner and skipping breakfast because it cut into your riding time?  Going to the dunes is about escape from the over burden of complications in our normal life.  The smell of fresh air, the feel of sand in everything you wear, the pain from staying in the ATV saddle too long.

Sure the RV has some benefits.  Like a comfortable place to rest at night (and keeping the monsters out) and the private potty facilities are very convenient.  But that's about it.  The Dunes are there to be ridden and ridden hard.  I don't have time to shower and blow dry my hair.  Watch a DVD, make a gourmet meal, make the bed and then vacuum up that nasty sand from getting all over the nice carpet.

I just want to ride.  Explore new trails, dart up the side of a large dune and look out over the expanse of smooth sand before me.  Call me old fashion, I want to ride the dunes, not sit in a portable hotel room.  And yes, I still want my sandwich cut in a diagonal.

If this video clip does not make you want to go outside, right now in the cold rain, in your PJ's to load the trailer for the Dunes, I don't know what would.

Wow awesome video, Ty for the link.  It makes me realize it has been way to long since I've been to the dunes.
