just got back from a trip to Florence Monday night and averaged 12.7 pulling the FS3000 with 5 quads and full fuel. avg speed was 65-70. The cps sensor made a huge difference with power and milage.

Hi Dune Junkie, how many miles are on your truck? Do you have many lights going to work that you have to stop at?? I'm just wondering why your in town milage is so low. What about hiway miles.

No lights just one left turn, i mostly coast down the hill.  The truck is only running for 5 min at the most!  and then its back up the hill on the way home.  5 times a week.  my truck barely has 5,500 miles on it since april! Shocked  Also, keep in mind that these numbers are off the driver info center that is on the dash.  which have not been calabrated from stock tires to 33"s!

I wouldnt fret the mileage issue too much DJ. It will come up as you put 5-10k more on the clock. My PSD didnt get more than 15 on the freeway until about 30k I get about 20MPG now, when I put the 33' 5er on the back it drops to 10-13 MPG.

I have a question to ask. If you cut your muffler and cataletic converter out and put in a straight through pipe, does this void your warentee ?  I went 2 weeks ago and had that done on my Dodge and it is louder but not where you have to shout at one another. The wife don't like it so I am thinking about going back in and having the cataletic converter put back in. What does everybody think ?

Here is my official CYA response: removing EPA mandated emmisions items such as a cat is illegal and shouldnt be done.
Now on to how I really feel. The Cat is nothing more than a restriction in the exhaust system of a diesel, and should be placed in a landfill. If you want to quiet it down a little, while maintaining higher performance levels, look into the Walker "big truck" muffler. Another option would be a MBRP or other performance muffler.
The Cummins sounds really good stock (not like the PSD) but a BTM or other performance muffler increases the sound quality (deeper and louder) but is still quieter than stock.
NAPA in Reedsport should be able to get a Walker "big truck" muffler for around 50 bucks(I think thats the price)

The tank is 35 gal. I have been supervising an office in Ashland(about 25-30 miles from home). Mainly hwy miles, some city driving the boy to tae kwon do pratice 3 nites a week. and errends for the wife. I was driving slower and getting worse milage. After seeing a link to the Cummins site and putting in the infor they asked for, they give you a reccomended rpm, they came up with 2150 for best combo on fuel milage and power. IT WORKS.

I taken my Dodge in a couple of weeks ago and had the cat and muffler taken out. I would drive to coos bay and on the meter above would say 21.6 mpg. Well I went in and had the cat put back in because I heard that the warentee would be voided, so I decided to put it back in. Well I went to coos bay yesterday and that meter showed 19.1.  I totally agree with  VP Insandity on the speed of the motor. I have done that before and it gets a lot better milage going faster. When we went to the RV show there in Medford, Wiz and I drove around 75 to 80 and we got really good milage. But it was to fast for me.

Strange....
I have heard that the mileage of a diesel only drops by 2-3 MPG when towing a trialer?Huh

Seems like you guys are getting a LOT less than that while pulling trailers with your diesels??? Huh

I'm confused!! Huh

When I pull a small utl trailer, I may lose only 1 mile per gallon. BUT, when I hook up to the toy hauler, I am lucky to get 12-13 mpg's. The difference is the Diesel can pull the heavy loads much better than a Gasser and not react as much to the weight as the gas engine does. You do however hear the turbo sing a pretty tune, and that translates to work the engine is doing, so it needs to drink more to do so. Just like us when we work hard, we eat more.

So what should I expect pulling a 8 1/2' wide by 20' long enclosed trailer (utility type, NOT toy hauler type)  with 2-4 ATVs in it??
