Letting the truck sit for extended periods of time
« on: October 31, 2006, 11:15:35 PM »

Ok, so I bought a new Dodge 2500 Diesel about 3 weeks ago, but it has been sitting in the shed ever since due to the fact that I bought it for towing an enclosed trailer (IE trips to the coast and to St. Anthony).  I have an Acura as my daily driver (it gets WAY better gas mileage than the Dodge).

So here's the Q.....
Is it going to hurt the truck to just sit there for weeks at a time??  I have heard that it is worse to drive a diesel for short trips, and that it is BETTER to let it sit if its not gonna be run for long drives.

Are there any tips or things that I need to know if I indeed am going to be letting it sit for extended periods of time?? Huh

Thanks! Wink

How long is extended periods of time?? I use mine as a daily driver and to me if it sits for the weekend I miss it. I really don't think you will hurt anything with it sitting. If it sits for say a month I would start it, let it warm up and take it for a drive for at least 10 miles or so. Also you would probably want some sort of fuel additive for sitting longer than a month. I'm sure PDP Shane will pipe up and give some great advice from his in depth experience.

With it getting colder out , if you dont drive ti very often , i would at least plug it in . If you dont have a cord for your block heater you can get one at the local dodge dealer for about $50 . Plugging it in will at least keep the oil circulating through the block and it will also keep the block warm on those long lonely nights out in the shed . Cool

That's about the price my dealer had quoted me, I went to Cummins and picked it up for $14.00. Same for the fuel filter and any other part I may need for the engine.

under the right condition, Sure. With a 14k trailer behind each truck I would love to. Empty I know the D-max or Powerstroke would take me, However our trucks were ment to pull. I know what the strongest puller is.  Grin

V.P. , I'm very disapointed in you . You make your cummins sound like its a 4 cylinder ! If you could beat him pulling a 14,000 lb trailer , you could beat him empty , that is if D.J. were to turn off his programmer . If it were me , I'd crank it up and leave you sittin' at the line , breathin' black stuff !!! Have fun . Cool
