atv's on the dunes
« on: August 18, 2005, 06:31:43 AM »

My wife was talking to someone yesterday, and this person talked to a ranger on the dunes last week. This ranger person said that in the near future they will limit the number of riders on the dunes with residents having prefrence. This sounds like bs to me, Has anyone else heard of this??

I really hope that isn't the case, We all invest too much money into this sport to have some pencil pusher who probably never rides try to tell us when and where we are going to ride.

I can tell you that according to the head ranger in Reedsport, when the established density of riders to sand is reached, there will be restrictions. I was told this a little over a month ago and believe the ratio is 1.5 atv riders per acre.

how will they do this?? do they go by sites used or is their someone counting riders on a certain spot on the dunes? I don't see how the can get an accurate count.

I was told that they will use a formula that factors all the traditional camping spots and the day use areas. I would like to think it is years away from that but you never know what the FS has in store for us.

I just read this thread and I have heard nothing of the sort. I think that the forest service is just trying to stir things up a little.

I don't like the forest service. I think that I am not alone either. I have asked them several times, what have they done to help the ATVers ? They can't come up with not 1 thing. They have told me that they hate ATV's. I do understand why to. They have to get out of there vehicles and do something once in a while.

Most people don't know this. But did you all know that the forest service will not maintain the highway from the new staging area to the 3rd parking lot in Winchester Bay.  I know this for a fact. A great friend of mine that works for the county road dept, told me that the forest service won't maintain the highway there because they say that they don't have the funds to do so. They own that road but the county does all the maintainence. The county is working really well with the ATVers cause they know that the dunes is the only thing that is supporting this area. They have great plans on this area in the future.

I have a real hard time dealing with the USFS anymore.  About 15 years ago I found a meth dump. I was in central oregon on my way woodcutting when I came across a place where there was 4 - 55 gallon barrels, several 15 gallon barrels, and a couple of 5 gallon jeep cans, all which were brand new containers. Well dummy me, I went to them and looked around for someone or something, signs or whatever. Nobody around and no signs either. So I opened up one of the jeep cans and stuck my finger in there and then smelled it to see what it was. Hell I didn't think about a meth dump. Well after about a minute my finger began to burn really bad. I tried to wash it off and done just about everything to get it to stop burning. After a couple of hours it eased up a lot. Well I got my load and started home. When I got home my finger was still hurting pretty bad. Well I called a good friend of mine that was a law enforcement officer for the forest service, to talk to him about what had happened. He came to my house right away. I told him everything that happened. He asked me if I knew exactly where it was at, I told him yes I can. So I drew out a perfect map where it was at. He asked me if I was willing to go over there and show them where it was at if they couldn't find it. I said sure, anytime. Well they drove right to it. Several months went by and not a word from them. So I went in to the office and asked them. They told me that they cleaned it up, all 365 gallons of it, and they arrested 42 people in connection with it. I told them that I thought that they were a bunch of jerks for not at least calling me to say thanks for the tips. They still wouldn't thank me. Even my so called friend wouldn't even thank me. I thought that they were wrong for not calling me and thankling me for doing that.  You can bet that they taken all the credit for the whole thing. That was only one thing that pi$$ed me off at them. There is several more things to.

this is so crazy...they think an oil well in natural preserved wetlands is ok but quads on the dunes are an enviromental hazard? No offence to anyone but this is typical republican bs.
