I like spinreel.........kind of tight fit for your toyhauler.........no hook ups for your toyhauler.................go to be off the sand by 10 pm (pretty sure about that)...........short trip to the sand and some good sand at spinreel too!
koa...........very expensive!!!!!! like 51 a night or something outragous like that........... long way to ride with paddle tires to the sand...............a very quiet campground no loud parties........very peaseful.
guess it is all in what you are lookin for.............

We have stayed at Spinreel many times. We now have sand access property so we don't have to stay there anymore. Thank god. In the past we have had a lot of trouble with the camp hosts there. One time I was popping a bag of popcorn and I had my generator running. Well 1 minute after 10:00 pm, the camp host come to our trailer and almost kicked us out for running our genny after 10:00.
Also, If you haven't got reservations at Spinreel by now, I bet that you won't be able to get any. They fill up really fast.
On another note. Down at Hauser, there is a huge mytle wood shop right beside the highway 101. Well this winter they paved the whole parking lot. Now they are going to stripe it all off for camping. I stopped in and talked to them and they said it is $20.00 a night, with no hookups, just pavement. And no tents. Because there is no sanicans there and they didn't want people to go out in the brush. To me, that would be a great deal. Its sand access to.

Done both I usually bite and stay at the KOA. Two reasons, because with 3 kids and a wife the black and grey water tanks fill up pretty quick. Plus, I dont have to bring along my yamaha generator for power. The trip from the CG to the sand isn't an issue with me nor is the off the dunes time. (It's the price you pay to keep your riding area open) Because we all know soo well, is all it takes is a few bad apples when it comes to noise to make an entire group of riders look bad and soon give the anti-orv folks ground to stand on. Look at whats going on in Riverside Ca and private land owners riding on their own land. As hard as it may seem but we need to be on our P's and Q's when dealing with the anti-orv folks.

Have also done both. We actually usually stay at Horsfall Beach campground, right on the beach. Main reason being, if the kids get bored with riding, they can go play on the beach. Keeps them entertained (cheaply). KOA is best if you are going to be there for any length of time. Horribly expensive, but you have showers (use somebody else's water), a laundromat, game room for the kids, movie rentals, all the hookups, little store, etc. The only drawback of KOA for me, outside of the expense, is that you have to ride out on a little sand road and then on gravel/pavement to get out to the dunes. The little sand road drops you right at the top of Horsfall and the beginning of Hauser sand road out to the beach or Bull Run. It's all whatever your preference is. Spinreel, Horsfall, and Horsfall beach are all reservation only now. This is where you go to make reservations. Like the other guy said, Spinreel is probably full up by now. http://www.reserveamerica.com/jsp/commonpage.jsp?goto=/nrrs/or/spin/newindex.htmlAlthough, we were just at Horsfall Beach campground on Saturday, and there was NO camp host! Not sure what's up with that. People were parked wherever they wanted to park, no day use permits, no nothing. Makes me a little nervous, as we have reservations there for Memorial Day weekend. With no camphost, who is going to enforce the reservations? ? I guess I'll need to check on that.
