RV holding tank question
« on: February 15, 2006, 09:01:23 PM »

My mother in law has a 39ft 5th wheel that she lives in and it doesn't move. The last two times she has tried to dump the tanks, they won't flow out of the hose and she has to pay to have the tanks pumped. Is there a solution she can put into the tanks to not have to pay to pump them?? Any help would be great.

Is the trailer on a level platform?  There should be no reason it shouldn't flow, unless either the drain pipe is plugged, which, you could snake it, and go from the outside in to make sure it is unclogged...............

lets see........

not level, and won't flow down..............
plugged pipe, need to snake it out...........
a small critter lives in there and dosen't want to leave his home............LOL!  just kidding!

Its really an A & B operation.  A big tank of poo, and a pipe that you open to drain it.  hhhmmm Huh

Big tank of poo and pull the plug, my thoughts the same. BUt nothing happens and she has had to call to have the tanks pumped the last two monthes. Is there something that could make the tanks slick?? No stick must flow

Is the pump guy washing it out after he pumps it? It might have a build up of solids on the bottom and if it doesn't get washed out it will cause the same problem next time. Also have you tried starting with more water in the tank? That might help things flow easer when dumping.

To start with, RV's are not ment to be setting stationary all the time. The reason is the black water tank has to have liquids for it to flo out adequately. By not moving, the solids will just build up in one spot and not desolve right.   There is 2 different things that she can do. One is close the black water tank off and only open it when it is full. The other thing is, go buy a 25 lb sack of LIME. Lime will break down solids. But you still need liquid in the tank for it to work.

I would do the first one. Close the valve on the black water holding tank, put in a big cup full of lime when it is just emptied out, and then dump it when the guage says full. I think that this is the way to go.

I think that is why they started installing the tank sprayers pretty much standard now on most new rv's.

Did your mother in law get everything worked out vp?

Towman1 is correct, Its a must that you maintain water, At least 1/2 tank full add lime or dry yeast. Remember it is important to use single ply and don't treat it like toilet at a home. ( don't put anything else in it). And dump frequently by filling the tank with water prior to dumping. If it dose not have a built in sprayer, you can get one that attaches to a hose and clean it that way.

Yes she did get if fixed. She had to have it pumped with a truck.

I have one in my Jayco, It works good, You have to flush and fill 2 or 3 times when you haven't moved the trailer. I recommend  that you plan to drive a few miles before dumping, if you can. It doesn't always work out that way.

If you don't have enough water when using, you can get a permanent poo rock in the bottom of the tank. The hose attachment type work good too.You just have to go through the toilet. Shocked
